Last year, we’ve seen some hybrid food innovations such as the cronut (donut + croissant) and leche puto or puto leche (leche flan + puto) as an example. Jack N Jill, the makers of Cream-O, made it’s own delicious hybrid for the Cream-Oholics. It’s the Cream-O Brownie Crunch, the goodness of a cookie and brownies in one.
When I went to the supermarket last week, I saw these and immediately bought one pack each, Peanut Thins and Choco Chips. My fave is the Choco Chips because of its distinct chocolatey flavor from the added chocolate chips.

Once upon a time when there weren’t any ramen restaurants yet in malls and the food choices were very limited, we were satisfied to stuff ourselves with Mexican food from Mexicali. Now that the food scene has something for everyone, we still come back for that familiar taste of Mexican food, comfort food bursting with flavors, pass the garlic sauce pls!
But this post isn’t about Mexicali, but of its sibling, the famous El Chupacabra.

It’s a bit late for Jeff and I to try El Chupacabra, it’s been around for like 2 years already and yet we haven’t tried it. But we kept it under our radar, and by the time we got the chance to go (and eat!) in Makati, you know what’s next. The quest for that elusive Polaris street alone made me excited!
It was a Friday night so the place was packed and the long tables even at the street were already occupied. Good thing we’re only dining for two and they secured us a place just in front of the bar, near the grill. Later on, I found out that they also have an air-conditioned area (!!!) when I went to the comfort room. We would have chosen to dine inside had they asked us of our preference because we’re non-smokers and we don’t like the smell of the food sticking in our clothes.
I ordered Carne Asada, since it’s their bestseller. I seldom have meat whenever we’re dining out because I’m always disappointed, I always find it difficult to chew. So I always have chicken or anything other than their meat.

But El Chupacabra’s Carne Asada is a different story. Upon putting this plate in front of me, I reached out for that one piece of meat first. No onions, no bell peppers, no garlic sauce, no chili sauce, just that piece of good ole’ grilled beef.
And then I told Jeff, “Grabeee, ang sarap!”
Each bite of the tacos is bursting with flavors. The cilantro adds a fresh and citrusy taste to it. Adjust the flavor by adding garlic sauce or chili sauce.
Jeff, still waiting for his order, got curious and asked for a taste. And he agreed.
Now, he’s more than eager to taste his Grilled Boneless Chicken.

Now, this Grilled Boneless Chicken looks very familiar. If you eat at Mexicali, you’ll know why. This is just the same with Mexicali’s Grilled Chicken Plate. But El Chupacabra’s is cheaper and has two big chunks of boneless chicken. Same salad, same rice, and same great taste of juicy tender boneless chicken.
Our Mexican food experience won’t be complete without these two….
Now, we know why there’s a craze about this hole-in-the-wall Makati food joint El Chupacabra, they do serve damn good Mexican food!

For the past 2 years, the ramen craze hit Manila by storm with different ramen franchises opening for the public. But this came to me as a surprise, did you know that there’s an authentic Japanese restaurant that specializes in tempura? That’s Tempura Tendon Tenya Philippines and they finally opened their first store at SM Megamall. Tempura Tendon Tenya hails from Asakusa, Tokyo, Japan, it is considered as the no. 1 tendon restaurant chain in Japan!

But first, let me tell you the what “Tendon” means. Tendon is the combined word for TEMPURA and DONBURI. Tempura is a Japanese frying technique while Donburi is an authentic Japanese rice bowl with different types of toppings. Try one these Tendon creations at Tenya.
I was invited at the private dining event at Tempura Tendon Tenya in SM Megamall a few weeks ago. I chose to sample the Classic Tempura Teishoku.

Teishoku, pronounced as “Tay-show-ku” means classic Japanese set meal with Japanese rice, potato salad, miso soup, tempura sauce, radish, ginger, pickles, and basket of tempura.
The basket in the Classic Tempura comes with black tiger prawn, squid, kisu (a type of fish), small kakiage, green beans, and sweet potato.
The tempura, being the star of the set has a mind-blowing crispiness, you know it’s fried yet you can’t tell because it’s non-greasy. The tempura batter is just perfect, I always get full after a serving or two of tempura in other restaurants because of the thick batter. But at Tenya, the batter is lightly flavored without overpowering the flavors of the other ingredients.
Kids will surely finish their meals at Tenya because kid’s meals are served in cute food plates and comes with a bottle of Yakult and a toy.

My favorite dish served to us during the event was this Spicy Pork. The meat is thinly sliced so that it just almost melts in your mouth while the spiciness of sauce explodes in your mouth. In the menu, look for Spicy Pork Dupbap, it is served with rice.

As the chosen contender after numerous elimination rounds, his appetite and his efforts were certainly rewarded, as he came out victorious. He is now the World Record holder for consuming a pizza in 23.62 short seconds. Having achieved his goal of bringing glory to his favorite pizza restaurant and to the Philippines, he has certainly made his fellow Shakey’s loyalists and countrymen proud.

You know it’s the Mid-Autumn Festival or the Mooncake festival when mooncakes are abundant. During our Hong Kong vacation last week, I’ve seen a lot of stores selling mooncakes. Even the posters at MTR stations advertises all kinds of mooncakes, from traditional ones to mochi-filled ones. But what caught my eye are the ones sold in Starbucks. I thought I can buy the lotus filled ones with salted egg yolks here in Manila but not the Starbucks mooncakes because they don’t sell it here. I bought 1 box of Starbucks mooncakes from Hong Kong as pasalubong, I wish I had plenty of luggage space so that I can buy more mooncakes from other stores.

On our 6th day in Hong Kong, we were seriously hankering for some rice and a different kind of cuisine. We got tired eating noodles and Paisano’s pizza no matter how delicious it is. So I suggested that we look for Ebenezeer’s for some kebabs and curry. They have two branches in TST, one in Ashley Road and another one in Prat Avenue. We went to their Prat Avenue branch.
The staff immediately assisted us with our orders. He even informed us that they have a lunch hour promo and that we should order that instant because the promo will end at 5 pm.
Chicken Curry with Rice, 53 HKD
Someone got really happy that their Chicken Curry comes with a cup of rice, haha. Aside from that, the chicken is boneless so it’s a joy to eat. The curry sauce is spiced just right, spicy and flavorful.
Gyros (Chicken Kebab), 60 HKD
Can you see how those generous bits of chicken, veggies, and dressing are neatly rolled up into one bundle of gastronomic delight? I tasted bits of chicken and I can say that it’s well seasoned. But I still miss having a generous amount of sauce with my kebab. I haven’t asked though if they have garlic sauce available in the restaurant.
Garlic Naan, 20 HKD
We ordered Garlic Naan for Gwen and she liked it. She even ate another one while waiting for our flight back home.
Ebenezeer’s is one happy discovery while we’re in Hong Kong. Make sure to visit one of their branches during your stay for some good kebabs and curries.

Greenwich wants everyone to discover a new barkada experience while enjoying their newest pizza flavor, Cheesy Steak and Fries Overload. Just mentioning the name makes my mouth water… wait till you hear what’s on it. It has melt-in-your-mouth steak, three types of cheeses namely mozzarella, cream cheese, and cheddar cheese, finished with crunchy potato strings on top.
I love the use of 3 cheeses as it offers different cheesy flavor in each bite. The crunch from the potato strings is the perfect complement to the gooey cheese. I’m totally digging this flavor, in fact I want one right now while I’m writing this post. However, for the best experience, this pizza is good for dine-in only because the potato strings might get soggy when you have it to go or for delivery.
Another must try when you dine at Greenwich are the Wacky Wings and Pizza Fries. Being a chicken wings lover, I enjoyed my Wacky Wings and loved how crispy the skin is. It came with a dip but I ate it as is.
My all-time fave at Greenwich is their lasagna, I’ve been trying to recreate that white sauce on top at home but I always fail I end up ordering one instead.
During the launch, Greenwich brand ambassadors Yassi Pressman, Andre Paras, and Robi Domingo also joined the fun activities and gamely served pizza to the guests.
